Going direct to video? - Review "127 Hrs"

I know I’m a little late as the film has been out for a little while now. I found this film so rewarding despite the hype and potential of a big let down.
Ok, so as most know the film centres around James Franco as Aron Rolston, and his amazing true-life tale endurance and self-discovery when he gets trapped in a crevice in the middle nowhere in an area of Utah he calls “canyon country.”

Film Summary

A seemingly lonely and rather eccentric character, Aron has a love for off road biking and climbing. As the film opens he sets off for a routine hike across rugged terrain.

On his Journey he meets two hikers, Kristi (Kate Mara) and Megan (Amber Tamblyn) and helps them along to their destination.

As he continues on his hike alone, Aron becomes trapped as a boulder crushes his arm and traps him inside a small canyon. Whilst so isolated Aron begins a test of endurance that will enable him to assess his life and see his future to some excruciating ends.

Pros
Another massive accomplishment from Danny Boyle, one of my favourite directors. Ill try not to get too "Fan Girl" and keep my film student head on.

Feel
The initial set up in the opening scenes claustrophobically kinetic, setting Aron in a busy bustling world where nothing ever stops, people move and live on mass in groups with no individual identity. This gave a wonderful stark contrast to the freedom and escape Aron makes to the Canyons, both physically with the dark empty night stretching out before him and the emotional, almost primal release from the character himself, relishing in removing himself from the monotony of the city.

Sound and Music
Music throughout was interesting, actual songs used gave an enhancement to the setting and characters feelings or situation, as any good soundtrack should. It was advantageous to steer away from well known releases as in the case with Boyle’s previous movie Slumdog millionaire. I felt that the “Jia Ho” track detracted from the tense emotional situations and lent almost cheapness to the story. This could have been improved by removing western US acts from the song and retained the cultural validity of the song. However I digress, the “unknown” music element kept the soundtrack fresh and unpredictable.
The sound effects and instrumental elements of the film were perfect. Certain key moments of were punctuated with unsettling high-pitched screeches, giving the viewer a heightened involvement with how the character feels. Moments of surreal hallucinations and comedic narrative delivered by James Franco perfectly, were framed with snippets of equally altered audio used to great effect. Additionally the musical score was spot on emphasising the tension or heartbreak of a situation without being distracting.

Filming / Lighting
As with the sound, the shooting and lighting of each scene are wonderfully evocative, from the baron, sun bleached ground to the flashbacks of comforting intimate moments the lighting as well as shot placing worked hand in hand to put you in Aron’s shoes and feel his loss for a life that may be slipping through his fingers.

Cons
I was immediately concerned with the sensationalist remarks from those that have seen this film and raved, “oh the gore” “totally unnecessary”. I reserved all judgment as this could easily be yet another “shocker” movie without substance, yet hoped I would be proved wrong. Obviously I was and the emotional, introspective ride you are taken on far outweighs the moment that Aron takes a drastic decision. It’s all about the context, let’s remember this is based on a true story, I’m not sure I could cope as Aron did, but it’s good for us to be reminded sometimes in our comfy cosy lives that one day we might need to have the survival instinct to simply continue living.

Characters – Love them or hate them?
All the characters were well played. By not involving itself with the rest of the cast, the storyline enables you to see things from the Protagonist's side and relate only to his feelings of anguish. One highlight would be the Hikers Megan and Kristi. Partly due to the ambiguity of their character, there was a clever way of inducing the intrigue that perhaps Aron had about them. I am grateful that the trap of stereotypes of nerdy hikers or lesbian life partners was not fallen into. It resulted in empathy for them as much as the centre character.

To end…

To sum up, 127 Hours was a wonderful movie. With breathtaking scenery and a tense situation that, along with well written characters takes you along on the journey with Aron. I didn’t expect this movie to touch me as much as it did, to see the outcome after such an awakening in a character. Beautifully shot, and emotionally scored, I left the cinema with a feeling I haven’t in a long time, that I had seen not a sensationalist piece of film but a sensitively shot portrayal of a real man's fight for his future.

Got my flash on.... - Lomo camera app!

My pic today is a shot from my lomo lomo app on my iPhone, gotta say it's never as good as real life lomo cameras - I love my Colorado splash lomo camera but until I can afford to buy the rest in the set, I can play with them all in this app!

Ok, the downside is that the wonderful random effects you get from light hitting the film are not so random in app.

This was taken on the double exposure "camera" with Chris at his best, I'm going to be experimenting with it a bit more and posting a flickr album soon - I'll link in an update, stay tuned!

Thursday Progress - Charity work, portfolio progressing!

Right, a new project is in my midst. Something for a charity close to my little sisters friend.

Having recently tragically losing her little girl she is raising money for the child bereavement charity that she has helped her and her family.

Through a charity football match and other events they will be helping the charity that has helped them so much through this terrible time.

Ill have more info on the events and online donation to the charity as soon as everything is figured out, but I'm going to design the t-shirts and perhaps some fliers and promo items, so lots of work for a very good cause!

In other news, my web page is getting there, struggling with my friend coding but I'll get there!

Till next time!

Wednesday Wisdom - Just keep swimming...

A little deep and meaningful insight from the wonderful world of Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo.

Dory: Hey there, Mr. Grumpy Gills. When life gets you down do you wanna know what you've gotta do?
Marlin: No I don't wanna know.
Dory: [singing] Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming. What do we do? We swim, swim.

Not the deepest or easiest to employ sometimes, but Dory makes me smile and laughter is the best medicine right!

Im Mobile Ready!

Hey all, just to let it be known,
my blog is now viewable in a mobile

Tuesday's News - New looks.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Well after getting over the so called "Blue Monday" yesterday I'm more determined than ever to make this my year.

My website has been in the form of an outdated splash page for a while now so it needs a new lick of paint!

My new logo, with my initials as I sign them, in my favorite chirpy colors (occasionally that of my hair too!) I feel is one that reflect me as a person, professional with a quirky twist.

So as you can see I've updated my blog page and am having promotional "CV" fliers created to send round to various creative agencies and venues around the city. Hopefully my renewed ooomph will shine through and I'll get some work!

In the meantime its continued job hunting and building my swanky new web page! Catch you tomorrow for some "Wednesday Wisdom"

Got my flash on... - The Festival Edition!

Ok, ok, I'm kind of in this photo but my photo for this week is mixed in with some exciting news!

Checking facebook I noticed an intriguing message from Sonisphere Festival. For those of you that don't know, a little background;

Sonisphere is a 2 year old festival, ran since 2009 held at the legendary Knebworth house. Over the past 2 years - in my humble opinion - it seems that Soni has taken over from the rapidly commercial, bland, money spinning rock/metal festivals around the UK. The first year was the trial run for my man Chris and I, yes this was a BRAND NEW festival, but not run by some nobody, we were in good hands.

Kilimanjaro Live is a venture of the much larger global promoter AEG. Add to that the man the myth the legend Stuart Galbraith, a star studded list of artist he has worked with and the massive addition of the Legendary Monsters of Rock Festival at Donnington Park (AKA Donny)

Okie Dokie, back to the story. This festival delivered 2 years running and now my favourite festival has advertised for Sonisphere City Ambassador; "Sonisphere are looking for enthusiastic, dedicated, passionate and entrepreneurial individuals to be a part of our brand new ‘Sonisphere City Ambassador’ team. We want people with a passion for live music and events to help us promote the Sonisphere festival in their own back yard."

What an amazing job! I'd get to do work I love, promoting a festival I love! Naturally I have applied, but wanted to show some Soni Love in the mean time with my favorite moment from 2009, my space hopper costume!!!

There is a fancy dress theme each year - space in 2009 - and thought id go a bit outside the box, and more into a craftily constructed orange bag of pillows!!! Many tried to have a hop on me that night and it kept me warm against the not so warm summer evening!

Now for my first ask for comments! What is your favorite moment of a festival or live music experience?

News – Jobs and my new routine for the new year!

Well, well, well! I've signed up to a recruitment open day for graduates here in Birmingham, fingers crossed this is the door that will open for me! I just need to tart up my portfolio and get it presented and hopefully I will succseed where I failed before and actually shine in an interview!!

My new year morning routine hasn't quite gone to plan, but when I get it I'll be posting about that too, a wonderful blogger - gala darling - has written a post on "New year new routine." Reminding us girls to be a little self indulgent and look after ourselves - rather than work your butt into the ground and you can find yourself more motivated than ever.
